Edgar Serrano – Founder of The Bilingual Spark™
Some of us grow up between languages. I chose to cross into one.
I was born and raised in Mexico City, where language meant heritage, family, and identity. At 18, I came to the United States to study — and with that move, I began to understand language not just as communication, but as connection.
For over 15 years, I’ve taught Spanish with one goal in mind: to help learners fall in love with language through stories, wonder, and belonging.
In 2018, I was named Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese — an honor I received in Salamanca, Spain, a city steeped in language and legacy. That moment reminded me that education, at its best, is deeply personal.
Today, I serve as President of the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL) and Executive Director of the Mississippi Foreign Language Association (MFLA), where I advocate for inclusive, early access to language learning.
But The Bilingual Spark™ is where it all comes together. It’s a space where families, educators, and children can discover the joy of bilingualism — not through drills or checklists, but through curiosity, culture, and color.
Because learning a new language shouldn’t feel like a task.
It should feel like coming home.
At the heart of it all is a simple belief:
Raíces y Alas — roots to honor where we come from, and wings to grow through language.
Why I Created Animales de México
I created Animales de México to help children — from Mississippi to anywhere in the world — discover that our planet is vast, beautiful, and full of stories waiting to be explored.
Mexico, the country where I was born, is rich in culture, wildlife, and natural wonders — yet too often, the image people have of it is narrow or incomplete.
Growing up in Mexico City, I was captivated by a show called La canica azul — The Big Blue Marble — a program that took young viewers on journeys around the world. It sparked in me a deep curiosity, one that eventually led me to explore more than 46 countries. Today, as a language educator in the U.S., I want to pass that spark on to children — through this book.
But Animales de México is more than a coloring book. It’s a cultural journey — crafted by someone who knows Mexico not just from the outside, but from within. Through native animals, bilingual stories, reflection prompts, and sound, I invite children to see the heart of Mexico and feel connected to something greater than themselves.
My hope is that as kids learn, explore, and color, they begin to wonder. That parents and teachers rediscover the joy of teaching culture through connection, not stereotypes. And that by celebrating the richness of our world, we raise children who are more curious, more compassionate, and more open to others.
Because when kids explore with wonder, they become voices of change.
